What is the Goal of Your Website?
A website is truly the digital home of your business. Unless you have an outstanding social media presence that attracts thousands of people, your website should be where you refer potential clients. As business owners, we’ve all heard of what’s important for our websites. We know that it is imperative to have strong content and graphics and for it to be aesthetically pleasing, and have as few technical errors as possible. But this week I want to focus on the goal of your site and how important it is to remember that. Here’s a few ways to go about it:
What is the goal of your site? Are you trying to sell products/services? Do you want to educate an audiance on a certain subject? Once you have a clear understanding of the site’s goal, you can go ahead and start creating your site and content to match it. For example, if your site’s goal is to sell, you are going to want a promotion tone across the site. If your site’s goal is to educate viewers, you’re going to want top-notch information that stands out. This may seem like common sense, but sometimes we might get distracted while creating our sites, and the goals get lost.
If your business is more information-based (think insurance agencies and doctors offices) a blog can be very useful. However, if you’re more of a visually-centered business like a hair salon or tattoo shop, you’ll want a strong gallery that you regularly update.
Branding is a central part of your site’s goal, and clients know it. It is so much easier for people remember your site if it’s on brand. Remember this is most likely your potential client’s first impression of your digital presence, so it’s going to be key for the branding to be consistent. Use your website as the chance to lay the groundwork for your brand: strengthen your mission, utilize your slogan and brand colors, and showcase your work. Make sure that people will walk away with a clear image of your brand and what you aim to accomplish after viewing your site.
I hope this helped you get more on track with your site’s goal. I have to admit, I’ve been in that state of confusion many times and it’s totally normal and ok if you’re in one now too! If you’re currently feeling lost with your site’s vision, I suggest writing down and organizing your thoughts. I’ve found that writing down issues and ways to fix them is very helpful.
