Web Accessibility-What You Need to Know
What is website accessibility and why does it matter? Website accessibility is very important to be aware of. It is imperative that everyone can navigate your site, regardless of disabilities. As a business owner, this is something that you need to be mindful of.
People with a variety of disabilities require accessible sites. Some of these disabilities include visual and auditory impairments, Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and Epilepsy.
It’s key to remember that your site is a creative expression of who you are and and what your business is about. I always encourage my clients to follow that mindset. However, it’s important to be mindful about other populations when creating your website. For example, websites with a lot of flashing lights could bring on seizures. Websites with a lot going on could also cause sensory overload for neurodiverse populations.
Font size is a significant part of web development. Make sure your font is big enough for people to read (16px is usually the minimum). Also, you might want to consider using some dyslexia friendly fonts or providing a feature that works with the font. Some dyslexia friendly fonts include Arial, Century Gothic, Verdana, Comic Sans and Calibri.
It’s a good idea to do a Google mobile friendly test on your website. This will point out if text is too small or images are too close together. If you still have questions, please reach out to me at bayrockdigitalmarketing@gmail.com.
