Mental Wellness During the Holidays

We are getting closer and closer to the holidays. With less than 10 days left, navigating it all can be incredibly stressful to do. However, we must keep our mental wellness intact during this season. Here are some helpful tips to keep in mind to enjoy the time.

We have to remember the time of year we are in. We’ve been dealing with shorter, darker days, colder weather, and more indoor time. The extra stress can make staying healthy during this time of year harder. This is why keeping these points in mind is so important.

Boundaries aren’t selfish. Although it might feel good to receive invites, we don’t always have to say yes. Whether it’s because you’re overbooked or don’t want to go, it’s okay to say no sometimes! Even though we want to be caring family members or friends, sometimes setting boundaries is what we need to do. A genuine person will understand why you are doing what you do.

Planning is huge. We have so much going on during this time, so having a plan is helpful. From family, friends, parties, gifts, and other activities, it can be challenging to keep up with it all. Ask yourself some questions, such as what you NEED to do. What would you LIKE to do? When does all this have to be done?

Fun fact: I’m one of those people who needs to get it all in. In past years, I’ve been overwhelmed with getting it all done, resulting in frustration. It has helped me communicate what I want to do during these weeks this year. It also helps to make a financial plan for the holidays. Between gifts and events, it can get costly. To avoid surprise bills, develop a plan for what’s financially feasible and stick to it.

Avoiding drama is a big step to make it an enjoyable holiday! Staying away from situations that can cause drama is essential for protecting your mental health. This can go hand in hand with getting boundaries, so get ready to say “no” to people and places that don’t serve you throughout the year. Remember, we want to make special memories with people who value us rather than those who distress us.

Self-care is vital to practice. Take time for yourself. Book a spa service or do one at home. Hit the gym or take a ride. Read a book or listen to some music. Make yourself a cup of tea and watch a movie. These are all ways to give yourself some joy during these busy days!

Acceptance is key. It helps us to navigate difficult situations that are our reality. Society and media like to paint a particular picture of how it “should” look. However, some people’s holiday can’t be like that for various reasons. Although it may be hard, accepting and embracing your situation is key to holiday happiness.

I hope this helped provide some helpful tips on navigating this season. Remember, it can be tricky, so give yourself some grace for your effort alone. Make the most of the season and create memories to cherish for years! Take time to enjoy the true beauty of the season. I’m wishing everyone happy holidays and a wonderful 2025!
