Follow Your Passion

Most of you know the story of why I started Bay Rock. To shorten it up, I always wanted a business. I studied Journalism and Media Technology in college and always enjoyed tech. After graduating college, I started to think of different business ideas and continued with different ideas during the summer of 2018.

The type of business I decided on was personal styling. I started Soiree Styling by GNF in June 2019 and continued trying with it until the world stopped in March of 2020. (Of course in quarantine and crisis people weren’t thinking about fashion).

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed learning about fashion and the jobs I did for a few clients. But it wasn’t a major passion. I love clothes but fashion doesn’t get me fired up. Shopping and expressing myself is just something I enjoy. Digital marketing brings me joy and anger. The lack of inclusion around mental health and neurodiversity in the workplace enrages me(which is why I launched i- Empower Solutions). It’s a topic I can talk about for hours.

My first serious business idea in high school was to open a hair salon. I loved getting my hair done and exploring different hair styles. However, much like fashion, it’s just something I enjoyed. Hair and clothes don’t fire me up.

Sometimes the secret to a business is when you find something wrong with the industry. Do you think that super successful entrepreneurs chose these fields because it was just a hobby? No. A lot of times it’s that anger and frustration that drives the business.

Follow your passion. Chose a business that you won’t get tired of. Think about products, services and industries that bring you both joy and frustration. Passion is so important. Think about areas of life you have a conflicted relationship with and that passion and ways to brand and monitize it. Have the courage to make the change that the world needs and don’t ever give up until it reaches the right audience! Happy creating!!
