Be Credible! (How to be Credible it Today’s Busy World

Credibility. It’s getting harder and harder to know what is credible and what isn’t. There used to be a time if you saw it on TV, it was real. Now everyone can post anything they want. It is extremely important for people to be mindful of what is valid in today’s hyper digital world.

The issue is that false information spreads FAST. We share it, repost it and send it to family and friends. But where is that information coming from? Here’s a few ways to see if you’re engaging with trustworthy sites and accounts.

The first thing is to understand the background of the user. An easy way is to research the business is just to Google it! If a business is Google verified, that’s a great sign.

It is imperative to look at the URL. It’s a good idea to see if the URL contains https and a lock symbol. Not only is this a great indicator of credibility but it also ensures site security. Tip: avoid purchasing from a site that doesn’t have https and a lock symbol!

It is also helpful to understand website suffixes. Some credible suffixes are .com, .org .edu, and .gov. Business websites usually end with .com while non-profits end in .org. It is advised to take caution when navigating through .net sites. .Net sites can be like a miscellaneous category. There are many site suffixes that you might’ve not even heard of. If it feels off, take heavier consideration.

This is just some basic information to safely navigate the digital space. Most of us are well-aware of what needs to be done to stay safe online. However, sometimes when we’re in that digital trance we might lose track of these guidelines and got into a place of false information and non-secure sites!
