What Are Links?

What are links? Links are a way to connect pages to each other. They work as a way to direct new visitors to your site. We all heard of links but as a business owner, it’s good to have a deeper understanding of how they can help and hurt your site. Here’s a few pointers to consider.

First, it’s important to have an understanding of different link terms. Most of you have probably heard of a hyperlink but what does that really mean? A hyperlink is when you’re able to jump from page to page by just clicking. Anchor text refers to the actual words in the hyperlink. Note: there are a few variations of anchor texts which include keyword anchors, naked URL, branded anchor and generic anchor. If you come across these different types, you will notice they look different from each other.. Links can also be internal or external. Internal links connect to other pages on the site, and external links connect to different sites.

Links can be beneficial and hurt your SEO, so paying attention to them is important. Links with a high spam score are something to watch out for to maintain your own SEO. Strong links, however, serve as credit to your site. Link equity is a key concept to keep in mind.

Link equity measures the authority and trust of links associated with your site. They also need to be in good SEO standing to help your own SEO. These factors are both technical and non-technical. For example, crawlability and HTTP status code are the technical parts to keep in mind, while relevance and authority are other factors to consider.

I hope this provided some information on links and why they matter. Remember, like any SEO this is an ongoing process, so you can’t expect overnight results. Building link equity over time and eliminating bad links will be helpful though. Here’s a resource from Moz to learn more about Link Equity. Also, THE HOTH has services that can help you build links for your site.
